Thomson SpeedTouch 585i Residential Wireless ADSL Gateway

Tristar sells AOL-crippled versions
These modems are great, but the ones Tristar are selling are crippled, AOL-branded 585sl versions with almost all configurable items made unavailable in the web interface. Buyer beware.
The only modem we can use
We live in a rural area which has an appaling broadband connection. When we first signed up for broadband we were supplied with a bt wireless router - it couldn't pick up the dsl connection. Thankfully a friend of mine was buying himself a new modem and gave me his old wired speedtouch 330....it worked. Since then I have come to realise that ONLY thomson seem to make modems capable of supplying us with a broadband connection! Yes, I've tried the rest with absolutely no success. My old st585v6 just bit the dust after 2 years reliable service, so I'm out hunting for a new one. If anyone out there has trouble with a broadband connection I would really give these modems a shot. Our connection speed dips as low as 134 kbps and never goes higher than 245kbps. If it hadn't been for my accidental meeting with a speedtouch I probably wouldn't be writing this review now!
It Works
It does what I wanted it to do - to act as a router for an ethernet connected PC and a wirelessly connected laptop - all nice simple stuff.
I purchased it because it is the router recommended by my (new) ISP. I have had no problems.
Having only intermediate IT knowledge and experience I needed something that was easy to set up and would run without problems. This fitted these requirements. I leave it on all the time and it runs warm - but only slightly warm, and I have no problem with that. I only need the connection for emailing, browsing and some moderate downloading, so I guess I am an average user. I never play on-line games so I cannot comment on its effectiveness in that respect
