Belkin Wireless Share Router DSL (Cable Line)


A good if unexciting choice
Frankly, it has been my experience that all routers are pretty much the same. Not too surprising really as they all perform the same basic task: to create a network for your local computers and other devices whilst keeping you safe from internet nasties. Few routers do much more although some may offer a few peripheral additional features.

Firstly, remember that this is a router and NOT a modem/router and is designed to be used in conjunction with another device to actually connect you to the internet such as a adsl modem or a cable TV box. A modem/router connects directly to your phone line to deliver the internet to you. Too often the term 'router' is used to cover both devices.

Anyway, this is a well priced and well specified modern router with an attractive and easy to use interface and set up wizard to walk you through getting on line. It offers a well specified firewall to keep most internet threats at bay and allows for a wireless N speed connection at...
Self-healing maybe but don't buy for easy set-up or sharing
This modem is advertised as "easy to set up", "self-healing" and "share HDD or printer".

I bought it because of line drop problems and the "self-healing" feature has cured this but it took me 10 days to get the modem working and the "share HDD" feature is so unreliable it is unusable. Two of the three features advertised are misleading in my opinion.

Problem with the set-up? Despite following the instructions to the letter my laptop couldn't see the router via wireless. I had to involve two 1/2hour calls to Belkin tech support in India to manually get it working via a network cable (best to factor in a few extra
