Good choice!
I'm new to the whole WiFi thing and it took me about four weeks to do the research about all the available standards and the products that support these standards, before finally taking the plunge to buy my wireless network solution.
After deciding on getting the 802.11g standard for my home network I then went about choosing suitable products to meet my requirements. I needed a 802.11g PC card for the notebook and a 802.11g access point (AP) to transmit and receive the data wirelessly.
Technical Requirements
I researched into four of the main suppliers that provide these components. My requirements were, at minimum:
- 802.11g devices
- 128 bit WEP encryption
- WPA security
- Detachable antennae (to be able to add longer range antennae should I require it)
- Good customer care and
- Good reviews, especially from end users.
The Linksys WAP54G was the product that had met most of the above requirements.

Good for speed
The Linksys Wireless G kit is around five times faster than the ordinary 11Mbit stuff but only about 25% more expensive. Plus it is completely backward compatible with any existing 11mbit kit you have set up.
If you have trouble with any of the G kit, pop along to Linksys' website and download the firmware updates for the software on the router, this fixed my problem with it not wanting to work with some US robotics kit.
Worked out of the box
As the title suggests the access point worked all most straight away once the easy to follow wizard had set every thing up for you.
It even gives you the WEP encryption key once you have entered a pass phrase.
I have tried other access points but, this has been the easiest to set up.
