Does the job perfectly
Having just bought a NAS I started looking into my network set-up. Despite gigabit connectors on my desktop and NAS, it dawned on my that the router (only 18 months old) only supported 100 Mbit!
Rather than throw away a perfectly good router, I decided to invest in a gigabit switch. Of several available this was at a good price and some scouting the web confirmed that it would support jumbo packets to a decent size (if I ever need them).
Be that as it may, I bough this unplugged some leads from my router into the switch, put a lead between the switch and the router and all worked. Without any clever re-configuration my NAS now transfers files more than twice as fast and I also gained some spare ports into the bargain!

Interface to PS3 and SKY + HD box connected to BT hub 3 Gigabit port.
BBC IPlayer is smooth and Sky Anytime+ is quick to download.
